The SSI Assistant Instructor is a dive professional certification that serves as the next step after becoming an SSI Divemaster along the scuba instructor pathway.
Key roles and responsibilities:
Assisting Instructors: Help SSI Open Water Instructors manage students and equipment, especially in confined water settings.
- Teaching Skills: Teach certain academic and pool/confined water sessions of the Open Water Diver program under the supervision of an instructor.
- Independent Programs: Conduct Scuba Skills Updates, Try Scuba, and Perfect Buoyancy programs independently.
- Supervising Open Water Training: Directly supervise and evaluate surface skills during Open Water training dives, under indirect supervision.
- Leadership and Group Management: Develop skills in managing groups of divers, recognizing and dealing with stress, and providing leadership.
- Building Experience: Gain valuable experience towards becoming a full SSI Open Water Instructor.
Prerequisites:
- Minimum age of 18 years old
- Have logged at least 60 open water dives, totaling 40 hours or more.
- Hold an active status SSI Divemaster certification or equivalent.
Career Pathway:
- Becoming an SSI Assistant Instructor is a crucial step for those who want to teach scuba diving and advance their careers as dive professionals.
- It's the first part of the SSI Instructor Training Course (ITC) and prepares candidates for the SSI Open Water Instructor certification.
- Assistant Instructors can enroll in the full ITC to become Open Water Instructors.
